Pulling it all together with one of my favorite colors.
It isn't often that I get to think about decorating because we're still immersed in the nuts and bolts of infrastructure issues.
However, as the second floor is nearing completion (we are so CLOSE!), we've begun thinking about what will be on the walls and floors. We're both big fans of aesthetic harmony and flow and patterns. If we were more timid, we'd be the type of couple who was tempted to paint every wall beige for fear of clashing with the colors in other rooms. But we LOVE color. So, we had to marry color and harmony in another way.
I suggested using a dark red as an accent color in each room to pull the whole house together and Aaron really liked the idea. I have this weird fascination with the Falun Red color used throughout Sweden (Falu rödfärg) to paint barns and houses. To me, it is the perfect shade of red. I actually didn't know that this particularshade of red had a special name and history until Aaron's dad, Mark, mentioned it to me.

Red has significance across many cultures. It's lucky in China. It is said that red represents joy, energy, life and creativity in Hindu cultures. Red is warm. It is fire. It blushes. It creates a stir.

I don't think I want to paint whole walls red in this house. That might be too much for me. But red accents here and there all over the house, creating a "connect the red dots" sort of feeling between rooms, would be fun.

We already have many dark red items to use in the house and we are staying alert to others. We don't like clutter so we have to choose our accents carefully as we will only have a few things here and there.

Do you have any other red ideas for us?

We have Stokke chairs for our kids that are red. They are peeking out in this post:

I have a small old house- with a living dining area in one, so we HAD to do red in the rest of the room after we got those chairs. So now we have red pillows (in various prints) on the sofa and chair. Also a red rocking chair in the living room, red highlights in the carpet.
Love reading your blog!

I always get a Japanese woodblock print calendar for my kitchen - the prints are lovely, and each one contains an element of red.

If you have any curtains, red tie-backs might work. Small area rugs are nice, too. Very cool idea, using the red accents to tie things together. It looks great!

Red clocks. It makes them easy to find, it's something useful, and they add another splash of color.

Red leather club chairs! We got two at Room and Board (ok, we scored at their outlet!) and regularly get compliments. One alone would be a perfect accent.

You learn something every day. I love that color red--and I never knew it had a name. It looks like you've got a great start to accessorizing. I was going to mention dishtowels, but you've already done that. Don't disregard red walls either. We have Benjamin Moore Burnt Peanut Red walls in our dining room that has extremely dark shellacked trim. Ugly name, beautiful deep red color.

my wife sells Longaberger so we have a lot of baskets around with colorful liners, but we also use their deep red pottery. Here's the catalog page: http://www.longaberger.com/flyer/jan07/spread22-23.html

Mmmm, I adore red! I'm highly in favor of this plan! I like the colors to harmonize in my house, too. Though we did a better job of it in our last house. I had a warm yellow kitchen, terra cotta living/dining, plum bedroom and sage bedroom, all pulled from a rug I found at a yard sale. It was a small house, so the color cohesiveness was really important.
Our house now only has two painted rooms, but they coordinate at least!

Red! When we first moved into our house and were looking at sofas, we fell in love with a huge, cardinal-red denim-covered sofa and oversized chair. It made our living room so warm. Since then, I've tried to decorate that room with primary colors--bright red, deep blue, and pure yellow, along with emerald green. It makes everything so warm, somehow, even the tepid beige wallpaper hung by the previous owners.
When I started collecting Navajo weavings, I first set out to acquire one with a large red "storm" pattern, intending to hang it in the living room. I found it but ended up putting it in the library instead. But when Dr. Tully Monster went to South Africa, he returned with a large jute rug in deep greens, blues, and reds that complemented the rest of the room so well.
So I guess my suggestion would be: wall hangings/tapestries/weavings that feature a beautiful, bold red. They warm rooms in ways that pictures can't.

Hey... I love an idea of red picture frames in a group. Maybe in that reading nook between your room and Grace's??

your falun red reminds me of fl wright's cherokee red, which is one of our favorite accent colors. i was never a fan of red (perhaps all those years working for target?), so i was surprised to find that red worked so well throughout our house. we have touches of wine red or cherokee red running through almost every room, and it really does add depth and warmth. the biggest red risk we took was our couch---originally a natural canvas, we had it slipcovered in a baroque patterned red chenille. it was just the right amount of punch to prevent the a&c furniture from looking too straight and serious.
we're also big fans of using unifying colors throughout the house. the current trend of painting each room in a house a very bold, contrasting color (think red dining room, bright blue living room, etc) leaves me mystified...

Love all your red accessories...I especially adore the last photo. I vote that you dress Miss Grace is red every day and just move her from room to room :)

At least on my monitor, that Falun Red looks very much like a Sherwin Williams historic color called "Roycroft Copper Red". I painted a whole kitchen this color and with "Roycroft Vellum" (cream) ceiling and off-white cabinetry. It looks great! Everyone who sees it wants it. It's also the exterior color of my double-hung window sashes. Go ahead an paint a whole room this red, especially if it has some painted or wood built-ins or wainscoting to contrast.
