When I was growing up I lived in Nebraska but every summer we'd head to Minnesota where my grandparents had a small log cabin on a lake. I'd love the winding dirt roads we'd take to get to the house, and the thick birch tree woods that surrounded the house and lake. We'd only be there one week or so, but back home we also kept several birch logs my parents kept near the fireplace (but never used) that we'd cut down at the cabin.
Seeing these birch bark wrapped candles from Crate & Barrel brought me right back to those memories.
Hopefully we'll finish our own fireplace this winter and I can put a few of these candles on the mantle...

Okay, I have a confession to make. I have a whole cabinet filled with candles, which I don't use but I like to have, you know, just in case; I hate to burn them -- they're too pretty. My husband finds this all extemely practical of me. LOL.

Okay, you used to summer on Bay Lake? I grew up in Aitkin, just a few more miles "up north"! Small world...

A mini MN reunion :-) My parents are up at their cabin as I type and my mom is determined to come home with a bunch of birch trunks to make those candles :-) She also makes wreathes out of this really fine evergreen. Fun.

LOVE those! I've been talking about these candles since a recent trip to c&b myself. Maybe now that you've posted them my husband will see that they are a worthy holiday purchase! :)

Hey, since it's a MN club, I have to say hi. My grandparents retired on Mille Lacs and eventually moved into the town of Aitkin. Small world! Birch bark is very appealing isn't it?! Good luck with the fireplace, I am trying to recall what you saw when you peeked behind the paneling, I may have to check out the archives...
