eNook

Category: Built-ins

Two months ago, I received an email from Jeannie while I was at work titled 'EUREKA!'.  Intrigued, I opened it up and was surprised by what I found...a link to an entry written by our fellow houseblogger The Road to Amhurst.  The entry was about a unique new twist on traditional built-in furniture: the eNook.

It makes a lot of sense, actually.  While built-ins were originally designed to solve the storage problems in bungalows designed during the turn of the century, today's storage problems are a bit different.

In the last 10 years, the number of electronic gadgets in the typical household have increased exponentially.  Cell phones, iPods, PDAs, and laptops are more the norm than the exception these days.

The eNook takes the original concept of built-in furniture and adds an electrical outlet.  Voila!  Gadget clutter is out of site, recharged, and ready to go.

Even better, it's an attractive design that actually could fit in to a real house without being an eyesore.

So, now there's an eNook (or a custom built-in variation) in our own design plans for the back of the house.

I wouldn't be surprised to see these become fairly standard in new construction some time in the next decade.

We had a cheaper metal version of these things in the hospital where I did my residency. They were a problem on my floor, though (pediatrics), because people tended to leave them open with the shelf out, and kids would bump there heads on them all of the time.

My BIL is a homebuilder in Columbus, Ohio, and always builds in a docking shelf in the mudroom with a shelf and plugs for PDAs, phones, etc. Not quite the eNook, but definitely a great way to ensure you have everything charged and ready to go.
