For some reason we seem to be on a bit of a modern design kick the last few weeks. First it was picking out our PAX wardrobes from Ikea (with the cool halogen lamps!). Now I've become fascinated with these rechargable Candela lights from Vessel. While I've seen them from time to time, a recent mention in AT caught my attention.
They work via batteries that are charged as they sit in the holding tray. Then when you lift one out, it lights up with a soft glow. The come in a variety of shapes and colors, but I'm partial to the simple white ones.

Why all these sleek and decidedly modern designs? I blame 'dirty house syndrome'...these things just LOOK clean, which is very appealing when all your personal belongings are coated with a fine layer of sawdust.
Seriously, I can see a place for these in our finished home. While we're more natural lighting people (J in particular has a thing for candles), sometimes candles just aren't a practical option. I'm thinking in particular of our future back yard deck, which we've started to start thinking about. Sometimes candles can work for lighting but just as often a slight breeze makes them unrealistic.
That said, Jeannie is still asleep right now and very well might veto anything that threatens her candle-loving tendancies. For now I'm just tucking these things away in the Idea Guide for future reference.
It's going to be a while until we have that cozy back deck to use them on, anyway...

I got those as a present for my friend and she loves them, apparently all her guests comment on them too. I've never seen them in person though....

I bought a set for my in-laws last summer. They have four cats, so dinner by candlelight isn't very practical for them. Also, when my mother-in-laws needs to make a trip to the bathroom at night, she uses a Candela to light her way, rather than disturb her husband by turning lights off and on. The manufacturer does make a child version of Candela--the Candleloo Night Lights. They're totally adorable.
