Our friends, Dave & Carol, followed the Art Deco era of their bungalow's roots to update its look and feel. This bathroom sink combines traditional subway tile, Art Deco reminiscent lighting, a terrazzo sink countertop, and glass tile trim with copper set behind it provides the color (and visual continuity throughout the bathroom. Terrazzo has been used as a building material in the U.S. since the 1800's.
The wooden cabinets bring a warm glow that match the wood trim in the surrounding rooms and hallway. The mirror is there--it is reflecting the wall in front of the sink as well as (eck!) me tucked into the walk through closet trying to take the picture. Can you see it? It is cleverly done.
(I apologize again for taking pictures after dark...I'm not much of a photographer, and "after dark" pictures seem to take on a yellowish glow with our flash.)
Their bath is a peaceful retreat tucked under the sloping eaves of the roof.
The separate shower is tucked behind the vanity and sink, and doesn't require a door due to the placement of the showerheads. One can take advantage of clever nooks for soaps and supplies. A separate showerhead is set lower for small children to reach. (Can you see it? It is the Blue Dragon :)
We really have them to thank (plus their lovely three girls) for helping us to assess the house we are restoring during the purchase process. They have provided much support, dulce leche ice cream (mmmmm!) and friendship as we have occasionally ventured out from our dust-covered nest.
Besides, they are an inspiration. Both of them are talented architects who began with a really broken house (worse than ours!), no children and a vision. Nine years later, they are a fabulous family of five with a home redesigned to reflect their vision and their bungalow's "good bones".
